Dashain

Dashain is Nepal’s biggest and longest Hindu festival, celebrated for 15 days in September–October. It symbolizes the victory of goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura, representing the triumph of good over evil. The festival begins with Ghatasthapana, when jamara (barley shoots) are planted. Important days include Fulpati, Maha Ashtami, and Maha Navami, with prayers and offerings to goddess Durga. On Vijaya Dashami, elders bless younger relatives with tika and jamara, wishing prosperity and health. Families reunite, enjoy feasts, fly kites and celebrate together. Dashain strengthens family bonds, cultural unity, and joy, making it Nepal’s most famous festival.
