The Rato Machindranath Jatra, also known as Bunga Dyah Jatra, is one of Nepal’s oldest and most vibrant festivals, celebrated annually in Patan. This month-long chariot procession honors Rato Machindranath, revered as the god of rain and compassion by both Hindus and Buddhists. The festival holds immense cultural and spiritual significance, particularly for the Newar community. This festival start from 28th April, 2025.
The Machindranath Jatra in Lalitpur begins at Pulchok and the chariot procession follows a route through Pulchok, Gabahal, Mangal Bazaar, Sundhara, Lagankhel, and culminates at Jawalakhel. The chariot is pulled through these areas before the final celebration, which includes the Bhoto Jatra at Jawalakhel.
Detailed Route 2025:
- Starting Point (April 3rd week): The chariot is built and the procession starts at Pulchok.
- Pulchok (MAY-1): The chariot is pulled from Pulchok.
- Gabahal (MAY-1): The chariot travels through Gabahal.
- Mangal Bazaar (MAY-2): The chariot continues to Mangal Bazaar.
- Sundhara (MAY-3): The procession then moves to Sundhara.
- Lagankhel (MAY-5 to above 2 weeks): The chariot proceeds through Lagankhel.
- Jawalakhel (May be in June): The chariot and procession end at Jawalakhel.
