Centuries Old Sacred Dance Drama of Patan
Kartik Nach is a mythical dance drama performed in Patan Durbar Square, every year during the month of Kartik (October–November) This dance is one of the important tantric mask dances of god & demons. The performance depicts stories from Hindu epics like the Ramayana, Mahabharata and tales of Lord Vishnu. The main legendary story of Pralad and Narsingha Avatar is also performed in during this period. Dancers wear colorful masks and costumes, accompanied by traditional Newar music. Kartik Nach preserves Patan’s religious, cultural and artistic heritage, making it a unique celebration of devotion and history.It was started in the 17th century by King Siddhi Narsingh Malla.

The Sacred Tale of Narsingh Avatar:
Adevout follower of Lord Vishnu named Prahlad was born to the demon king Hiranyakashipu. This king hated Vishnu and even tried to kill his own son for his faith. One day, Hiranyakashipu challenged Prahlad, demanding, “If your god is real, show me where he is!” Prahlad calmly replied, “Lord Vishnu is everywhere. He is even in this very pillar.” Enraged, the king struck the pillar. At that moment, a miracle occurred: Lord Vishnu burst forth in the form of Narasimha—a fearsome creature, half-man and half-lion. At twilight, neither day nor night, Narasimha defeated the tyrant Hiranyakashipu. This victory proved that faith and goodness will always triumph over arrogance and evil.
The tale of Prahlad and the Narasimha Avatar is a timeless message about unwavering devotion and the certainty of divine justice.
